European Commissioner: Ukraine is catastrophically slacking on the fight against corruption

17 January 2018

The patience of international community is wearing thin due to the lack of practical results in the fight against corruption in Ukraine, EuroPravda quotes the European Commissioner for European Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn as saying in his interview to Suspilne.

European Commissioner: Ukraine is catastrophically slacking on the fight against corruption

“As far as the fight against corruption is concerned, the actual results are, in my opinion, quite modest. I believe that the authorities must pay close attention to it: the government and other public bodies. It means not only establishing institutions or the existence of required legislation, but also how it is being implemented”, the European Commissioner said.

According to the Mr. Hahn, it is the practical implementation where the EU sees serious slacking, which Kyiv must address.

“That’s where the patience of international community is wearing thinner and thinner”, Mr. Hahn stressed.

The miserly indicator of electronic declaration audits is, in his opinion, a serious drawback.

“As far as I understand, one and a half million people have declared their property. However, if I’m not mistaken, only about a hundred of them have been checked so far. One hundred out of one and a half million is hardly a result”, Mr. Hahn said.

The European Commissioner criticized the absence of consequences from the audits of declarations.

“What happens next? All that must be aimed at improving the situation”, the European Commission member said.
