Progress made on new gas interconnector between Ukraine and Poland

The meeting took place on 30 November 2017 at the premises of the Energy Agency of the Republic of Serbia (AERS) in Belgrade. 

The Energy Community Secretariat acted as facilitator, as part of the Gas 2020 Agenda,between the representatives of transmission system operators and regulators of Poland and Ukraine in discussions on the status and further steps envisaged to construct the new Poland-Ukraine gas interconnector between the transmission systems of Gaz-System of Poland (Hermanowice node) and Ukrtransgaz of Ukraine (Bilche Volytsia UGS).

The meeting served to clarify the parties’ expectations regarding the project and possible procedures to be followed in order to test the market need for the interconnector were discussed. The parties agreed to set up a permanent working group, to be chaired by the Secretariat, and agreed on a schedule to continue the discussion on an open season rule book and the market test procedure.

The main aim of the new gas interconnector, which is a Project of Mutual Interest in the Energy Community – PMI Gas_14, is further enhancement of the interconnectivity and integrity of the regional markets through establishing a new bidirectional pipeline connecting Polish and Ukrainian gas transmission networks.
