Tusk urges EU states to extend gas rules to Russia’s Nord Stream 2

17 November 2017

Donald Tusk, president of the European Council, urged member states to “proceed swiftly” to extend EU gas rules to cover the new Nord Stream 2 pipeline, a project he fears will strengthen Moscow.

In a short, direct letter sent to the 28 member states, seen by the Financial Times, Mr Tusk said “time is of the essence” and urged leaders to move quickly to apply the gas directive to import pipelines like Nord Stream 2 – a project that he has previously said would “not serve the best European interest” and would leave Ukraine “at Russia’s mercy”.

Sent on Friday, the letter shows divisions in the EU over Nord Stream 2, which is being built by Gazprom, the Russian gas group, and funding from five European energy companies.
