United States and Ukraine agree on LNG deliveries to Ukraine via terminals in Poland

14 March 2020

The operator in this project will be either Trunk Gas Pipelines of Ukraine or Naftogaz of Ukraine NJSC.

LNG will be delivered for subsequent transmission to European countries via a hub on the basis of Ukrainian underground gas storage reservoirs, Kostiantyn Chyzhyk, Deputy Minister of Energy and Environmental Protection, said in his interview to Interfax-Ukraine.

“We have already signed a letter of intent with Louisiana Natural Gas Exports, Inc. They were ready to sign a memorandum with exact figures and obligations, but we need certain time for purely legal reasons to work out all points necessary to authorize the agencies concerned to sign this contract,” Mr. Chyzhyk said.

According to the Deputy Minister, the operator in this project will be either Trunk Gas Pipelines of Ukraine or Naftogaz of Ukraine NJSC.

According to Mr. Chyzhyk, this is an unprecedented full-scale project that will enhance energy and geopolitical independence of European countries from Russia, and will produce a large economic effect.

According to his estimates, the project will take two to three years to launch, because Poland’s present capability to receive the declared gas volume of 6-8 bcm remains limited.
