Ukraine exports more electricity than it imports

08 October 2024

The country managed to resume electricity exports

According to the Center for Economic Strategies (CES), at the beginning of October 2024, the volume of electricity exports from Ukraine exceeded the volume of imported resources, therefore, exports became positive.

In the last days of September, for the first time since May of this year, Ukraine managed to export about 0.8 GWh of electricity in certain hours, when the domestic demand was low, the Central Electric Power Company reports. In the first week of October, export volumes gradually increased and reached the figures of 2023. In particular, on October 3, 4,914 MWh of electricity was exported. And on October 7, positive net export (the difference between incoming and outgoing planned commercial exchanges with Ukraine) reached 2,635 MWh.

Currently, Ukraine needs electricity from abroad during certain hours when the volume of domestic consumption is the largest, but during most of the day there is an opportunity to export, and there is even a potential to increase exports.

"The export of electricity abroad is positive news, which indicates the normalization of the situation in the energy system. If the shortage of electricity in Ukraine resumes, the export can be quickly canceled", - according to the CEC.

As "Ukrainian Energy" reported, during the week from September 23 to 29, Ukraine exported electricity for the first time since May, imports fell by 31%.
