Fuel oil from sunken tankers in the Kerch Strait has flowed to Abkhazia

25 July 2025

The accident involving Russian vessels occurred in December last year, but the scale of the pollution is still increasing. This is reported by the Center for Countering Disinformation

Fuel oil that leaked from sunken Russian tankers in the Kerch Strait has reached the shores of Russian-occupied Abkhazia, the Center for Countering Disinformation reports.

They add that the environmental monitoring laboratory recorded an excess of petroleum products in the waters of the Black Sea.

Recall that on December 15, 2024, as a result of an accident involving two Russian tankers, tons of fuel oil spilled into the Black Sea, just like in 2007. This caused widespread pollution of the sea.

In January of this year, fuel oil from sunken Russian tankers reached the shores of the Odessa region. The dirt was then noticed in the Katranka recreational area near the Danube Biosphere Reserve and the Tuzlivski Limany National Nature Park.

The CPD notes that the scale of the pollution is still growing. The Russian authorities failed to contain the environmental disaster in time, allowing fuel oil to spread hundreds of kilometers along the coast. And since the wreckage of the tankers still remains on the seabed, fuel oil leaks may continue.

Seven months after the accident, the problem is being ignored. The authorities have stopped pretending to eliminate the consequences: no active work is being carried out, and the beaches contaminated with fuel oil are filled with tourists.

The Center for Countering Disinformation emphasizes that the Russian authorities, through their negligence, are turning their own territory into an ecological disaster zone. The Kremlin once again makes it clear that for the sake of its political interests, such as oil trade bypassing sanctions, it is ready to risk the environment, lives, and health of people.

As reported by "Ukrainian Energy", water is supplied only once every 2-3 days in the temporarily occupied part of the Donetsk region. The Center for Countering Disinformation believes that the water crisis in the occupied Donetsk region has reached a critical level.
