Up to 16 hours without light: the expert predicted what the winter would be

19 September 2024

Such conditions can be in frost

In case of frosts at a temperature of minus 10-15°C next winter, the disconnection schedule for utility consumers will be 12-16 hours a day. This was stated by the director of the Energy Research Center (EIR Center) Oleksandr Kharchenko during the discussion "Save the light: the battle for the Ukrainian energy grid" organized by the Wilson Center.

At the same time, according to the expert, critically important infrastructure and water and heat supply enterprises will continue to work, at least in large cities.

Іn the case of attacks by Russian aggressors on the distribution devices of nuclear power plants and the loss of the power of at least one nuclear power plant in the power system, this will lead to a nationwide power outage, and it will take two to three days just to restore power supply throughout the country.

"This will mean that during the next 10 days - two weeks, the restriction on electricity supply will be at the level of 20-22 hours per day," the director of the EIR Center predicted.

The second threat, according to him, is the difficult financial condition of the Ukrainian electricity market.

"Huge debts block any investment project from a private initiative, and it is necessary to find a solution as soon as possible, because many potential investors are already freezing projects," Kharchenko said.

At the same time, the Ukrainian energy system needs approximately 100 distributed generation facilities with a capacity of 1 to 50 MW each and a total capacity of 3-3.5 GW, which will require $4-4.5 billion of investment in the next two years.

As reported by "Ukrainian Energy",іn the winter of 2024-2025, Ukrainians can expect a 12-hour power outage and possible gas supply schedules.
