In two years - 25 attacks
From September 2022 to September 2024, the Russian Federation carried out 25 massive missile-drone attacks on Ukraine's energy system and thus endangered its stability and integrity. This is stated in a study by DiXi Group.
In 2022, 11 massive strikes were recorded, in 2023 – 5, in 2024 – 9. In total, Russian forces fired more than 1,400 missiles of various types and 500 attack UAVs at Ukrainian energy facilities.
The enemy used cruise missiles the most - up to 1,200 units. Three quarters of them were shot down by Ukrainian air defense. Ukrainian defense forces also destroyed about half of the guided air missiles. At the same time, anti-aircraft and ballistic missiles of the Russian Federation usually achieved their goals.
The report mentions UAVs, 98% of which are Iranian-developed attack drones of the "Shahed" type. The Ukrainian defense eliminated about 90% of the drones used by the Russian Federation. UAVs were first actively used in October 2022, and peak figures were recorded in August 2024, when 109 UAVs were launched in one wave, of which 99 were destroyed.
Analysts of the DiXi Group indicate that the attacks of the Russian troops led to significant destruction of the energy infrastructure, mostly in the Dnipropetrovsk, Lviv, Vinnytsia, Zaporizhzhya, Ivano-Frankivsk, Kyiv and Kharkiv regions. In these regions, 10 or more of the 25 attacks caused damage to energy facilities.
"As a result of the occupation and attacks during 2022-2023, the energy system of Ukraine lost about 21 GW of capacity. In 2024, losses from missile and drone attacks are estimated at more than 9 GW of thermal and hydro generation. The Russian Federation also regularly strikes critical power grid nodes in order to destabilize the power system and limit the ability to transmit electricity within the country, as well as make it more difficult to import," said Oksana Zuyeva, senior open data expert at DiXi Group.
For reference: during more than two and a half years of full-scale war, Russia attacked the Ukrainian energy industry much more often. This analysis covers only cases of massive systematic attacks on energy infrastructure facilities confirmed by the Ministry of Energy and Ukrenergo.
As "Ukrainian Energy" reported, аs a result of the fighting, there are 654 villages without electricity. In particular, consumers in the Donetsk, Dnipropetrovsk, Kharkiv, Sumy, Chernihiv, Kherson, Odesa regions are without electricity
