In October of this year, UN representatives held official talks with the Russians regarding the prohibition of attacks on the Ukrainian energy system
The United Nations has expressed international concern about the vulnerability of Ukraine's nuclear facilities, which depend on the stability of the energy system. This is reported in Energoatom.
"The latest large-scale missile attack by the Russian Federation on the energy system of Ukraine led to further significant damage to electrical substations, which are important for the operation of nuclear power plants," the experts emphasized.
The UN said that the timing of the attacks is of additional concern because Ukraine is approaching the coldest time of the year, when the demand for electricity increases sharply.
The recent shelling happened despite the warnings of 13 UN special rapporteurs and working groups, who in October of this year held official talks with Moscow to ban such attacks, in accordance with international humanitarian law.
In addition, Russian troops purposefully struck energy facilities despite previous arrest warrants issued by the International Criminal Court in June 2024 for high-ranking Russian government officials directly related to strikes on Ukraine's electricity infrastructure.
The experts also recalled the cases when the Russian troops subjected the personnel of the largest nuclear power plant in Europe - the Zaporizhzhya NPP - to intimidation, arbitrary detention, enforced disappearance and torture.
As "Ukrainian Energy" reported, on December 2, energy workers prevented a blackout at the ZNPP. Repair crews eliminated the dangerous consequences of enemy shelling at that time.
