Ukraine will not transport Russian gas to Europe – Prime Minister

17 December 2024

Denys Shmyhal explained Ukraine's position on gas transit to the EU following a conversation with the Prime Minister of Slovakia

Ukraine is ready to fulfill its obligations under the Association Agreement with the European Union regarding the transit of any gas, except Russian. Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal announced this on Telegram after a conversation with the Prime Minister of Slovakia Robert Fico.

"Ukraine's priority is guaranteed energy security for all of Europe, and in particular, uninterrupted supply of natural gas in the winter. Ukraine is ready to fulfill the obligations we have undertaken within the framework of the Association Agreement with the EU. Therefore, if the European Commission officially addresses Ukraine regarding the transit of any gas, except Russian, we will discuss it and are ready to implement relevant agreements based on the principles of energy security, both for the entire EU and for each European nation," he noted.

Denys Shmyhal separately emphasized that Ukraine's gas transit agreement with the Russian Federation expires on January 1, 2025 and will not be extended.

He also noted that Ukraine is grateful to all partners in Europe for understanding that Russia is using energy exports to finance a criminal and unprovoked war against our state and to continue its destabilizing activities against other European countries and the EU as a whole.

Therefore, according to him, it is important to strengthen the European Union's sanctions against Russia in the adopted 15th package, in particular against the shadow tanker fleet.

"Sanctions pressure against the Russian energy sector should be continued, this is one of the key elements of forcing Russia to make real peace," the head of the Ukrainian government urged.

Denys Shmyhal also reported that he discussed with Prime Minister Robert Fico the expansion of cooperation between Ukraine and Slovakia in the field of electricity. "Last week, 30% of electricity imports came from Slovakia. We are grateful for such support and are ready to expand these opportunities, as this strengthens both our peoples."

As reported by "Ukrainian Energy", on December 16, energy ministers of the European Union member states discussed preparations for winter in connection with the expiration of the gas transit agreement between Ukraine and Russia. The European Commission stated that it would not enter into negotiations in order to keep the route open.
