IAEA records damage to nuclear power plant substations

18 November 2024

Electricity production reduced due to massive military operations

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has reported that several substations at nuclear power plants (NPPs) in Ukraine have been damaged by Russian shelling. According to IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi, these attacks have created additional pressure on nuclear safety and security, which is a serious threat to the country’s energy infrastructure.

The shelling damaged several electrical substations on which the nuclear plants depend, leading to the failure of four main power transmission lines. Of the nine operating power units, only two are currently operating at full capacity, while the other six have reduced production to between 40% and 90% of maximum capacity.

Grossi stressed the importance of reliable grid connections for the operation of nuclear power plants, both for transmitting the electricity they produce and for providing power in the event of an accident. He called on the parties to the conflict to adhere to the seven key principles of nuclear safety, especially the fourth, which requires guaranteed external energy supply for all nuclear facilities.

As reported by "Ukrainian Energy", in May of this year "Energoatom" announced the start of preparations for the construction of 2 units at the PANPP.
