06 January 2025

No impact on any NPP equipment has been recorded so far

IAEA employees present in the occupied territory of the Zaporizhzhia NPP recorded two loud explosions near the plant on Sunday, January 5. This occurred against the backdrop of reports of a drone attack on the Zaporizhzhia NPP training center.

This is stated in a statement published the day before by IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi regarding the situation in Ukraine.

"Employees of the International Atomic Energy Agency reported hearing loud explosions near the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, coinciding with reports of a drone attack on the station's training center. This has become another threat to nuclear safety at Europe's largest nuclear power plant," Grossi said in a statement.

It said two loud explosions were heard outside the perimeter of the station at approximately 12:45 and 15:45. "At this time, the IAEA has not yet been able to confirm any impact. The team of experts also reported hearing repeated bursts of machine gun fire coming from the site," the Agency said.

There were no reported casualties or injuries, and there was no impact on any nuclear power plant equipment.

As reported by "Ukrainian Energy", at the end of last year, IAEA experts documented damage to critical substations. These substations are important for the operation of Ukrainian nuclear power plants.
