IAEA experts documented damage to critical substations

24 December 2024

These substations are important for the operation of Ukrainian nuclear power plants. They were damaged by attacks by Russian troops in November-December

Experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency have assessed the damage caused by the latest hostile attacks in November-December on energy infrastructure facilities that are critical for delivering nuclear power plants' capacity to consumers and ensuring the power supply of NPP power units for their own needs. The Ministry of Energy reports.

"Russian military strikes on civilian energy facilities, in particular key substations, directly threaten the nuclear and radiation safety of all of Europe. It is very important to involve international experts to record the consequences of actual damage to energy infrastructure, identified as key to the safe operation of nuclear power plants. Coordinated actions between the Ukrainian side and international partners are aimed at reducing the risks of nuclear incidents in the context of Russian military aggression against Ukraine," said Energy Minister Herman Galushchenko.

In particular, IAEA experts were able to compare the intensity of the strikes and, as a result, the damage to facilities from past attacks. The Agency representatives also recorded the results of the restoration work carried out and the status of the capacity of electrical substations.

As reported by "Ukrainian Energy", on December 12, the IAEA Board of Governors, at an extraordinary meeting in Vienna, initiated by Ukraine, adopted a Ukrainian draft resolution on the threats posed by attacks on energy infrastructure, which is critical for the safety of Ukrainian nuclear power plants.
