At the same time, electricity exports last year were the lowest in the last decade
In 2024, Ukraine imported 4,436.6 thousand MWh of electricity. This is the highest figure in the last 11 years (actual data before 2014 are not publicly available). In contrast, electricity exports decreased to a historical minimum of 348.5 thousand MWh.
This was reported by the DiXi Group analytical center, citing data published on the Energy Map portal.
Such anomalous figures are primarily a consequence of Russian strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure. From March 22 to December 25, 2024, Russian forces carried out 13 massive missile and drone attacks, launching 846 missiles of various types and 866 UAVs. Of these, 230 (27%) missiles and 25 (3%) UAVs were not shot down by air defense forces or neutralized by radar systems and, presumably, hit their targets.
Electricity imports were at their lowest in a year in January-February 2024, but after the start of massive enemy attacks, they began to grow rapidly. Peak import values were recorded in June and July, when electricity consumption increased due to abnormal heat, and some power units underwent traditional scheduled repairs to prepare them for the autumn-winter period.
In June 2024, electricity imports reached 858.4 thousand MWh, which is 6% more than was purchased for the entire year 2023 (806.4 thousand MWh), and is the largest monthly figure since 2014 (according to available data).
In 2024, Ukraine received 38.4% of its imported electricity from Hungary (1,705 thousand MWh). Commercial exchanges between the countries resumed on February 23 after the launch of joint auctions for the allocation of access to interstate interconnectors on the JAO platform. Prior to this, electricity exports were last carried out in February 2022, and imports were last carried out in January 2022.
Last year, 1,036.5 thousand MWh (23.4% of the total) was imported from Slovakia, 819.6 thousand MWh (18.5%) from Romania, 636.6 thousand MWh (14.3%) from Poland, and 238.9 thousand MWh (5.4%) from Moldova.
Electricity exports in 2024 amounted to 348.5 thousand MWh, which is 5% less than in 2023 and 90% less than in the pre-war year 2021.
During the year, exports were carried out in all available directions. The largest share of electricity was exported to Poland (88.4 thousand MWh, or 25.4%). Hungary received 76.6 thousand MWh (22%), Romania – 71.2 thousand MWh (20.4%), Moldova – 56.8 thousand MWh (16.3%) and Slovakia – 55.5 thousand MWh (15.9%).
The peak export volume was recorded in March, before the start of the massive shelling, during which Ukraine exported 154.1 thousand MWh (44% of the annual volume). In the period from May 12 to September 29, that is, for 140 days, electricity exports from Ukraine were completely stopped. In total, exports were carried out for 151 days (41% of the year), while for the remaining 215 days (59%) - there were zero. In contrast, imports practically did not stop - their complete absence was recorded only on two days of the year.
As reported by "Ukrainian Energy", in December 2024, Ukraine increased electricity imports by 2.7 times compared to November. At the same time, Ukraine's electricity exports in the last month of last year decreased by 84% compared to the previous month.
