Ukraine will soon start transporting hydrogen to EU countries

23 June 2025

Gas transmission system operators of Ukraine, Germany, the Czech Republic and Slovakia are working together to create a Central European Hydrogen Corridor

The gas transmission system operators of Ukraine (GTSO), Germany, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia are working together to create the Central European Hydrogen Corridor – a pipeline “highway” for transporting hydrogen from Ukraine to the EU.

This was stated by Deputy Minister of Energy Mykola Kolisnyk on June 21 during an online meeting with representatives of the German Society for International Cooperation GIZ. The parties discussed the prospects for the development of green hydrogen in Ukraine within the framework of the H2-diplo project, the press service of the Ministry of Energy reports.

This project is of key importance for the export of green hydrogen from Ukraine, as provided for by the EU Hydrogen Strategy until 2050, where Ukraine is identified as one of the strategic partners, the department emphasizes.

Mykola Kolisnyk noted that in the context of armed aggression by the Russian Federation and systematic shelling of energy infrastructure, taking into account the course towards decentralization of generation and the development of renewable energy sources, the Ministry of Energy considers the development of the hydrogen industry as an element of strengthening the sustainability of Ukraine's energy system.

The Deputy Minister of Energy also noted that the Ministry of Energy is interested in attracting international expertise to study the possibilities of storing hydrogen in underground gas storage facilities, organizational and technical measures necessary for the development of gaseous hydrogen transportation projects, as well as in assisting in the adaptation of Ukrainian legislation to EU requirements.

In return, German partners assured of their readiness to promote the development of the hydrogen market in Ukraine by conducting necessary research, specialized training for Ukrainian specialists, and attracting additional funding, the Ministry of Energy said in a statement.

As reported by "Ukrainian Energy", the GTS Operator of Ukraine, under the coordination of the Ministry of Energy, is working on expanding routes for additional gas imports to Ukraine, as well as ensuring its transportation through the Ukrainian GTS.
