Transmission system operators of continental European countries will increase the maximum capacity of electricity imports by Ukraine and Moldova from 1,700 to 2,100 MW starting December 1.
After several devastating strikes by Russia on the Ukrainian energy system, the expected capacity deficit in it during the 2024/2025 heating season has become significant. Therefore, since June 2024, European transmission system operators (TSOs) have been making calculations regarding the increase in the technical capabilities of electricity imports by Ukraine and Moldova this winter.
The results of the calculations made it possible to increase the power supply limit to Ukraine and Moldova from 1,700 to 2,100 MW from December 1, 2024, reports the press service of NEC "Ukrenergo".
Starting from March 2025, transmission system operators will have the opportunity to review the capacity limit for commercial electricity exchange between the EU and Ukraine and Moldova every month.
"Such an important increase in the opportunities for importing electricity is another sign of the strong support and solidarity of the community of transmission system operators of Europe with the peoples of Ukraine and Moldova," the European Network of Transmission System Operators of Continental Europe ENTSO-E believes.
"Ukrenergo" expressed its gratitude to European partners for their tangible and timely support. And to the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyi, for his personal involvement in negotiations at the highest level regarding the increase of technical capabilities for the import of electricity.
As "Ukrainian Energy" reported, in September Ukraine's negotiations with the network of system operators of continental Europe ENTSO-E on increasing capacity for electricity import were at the final stage. The Ukrainian side asked to increase the import capacity from the existing 1.7 GW to the technically possible 2.2 GW.
