Russians may start shelling after gas transit ends

The Ukrainian Gas Transportation System (GTS) is carrying out necessary tests due to a significant increase in the risks of missile attacks after the end of the five-year agreement with Gazprom on the pumping of Russian gas on January 1, 2025.

This was stated by Dmytro Lippa, General Director of the GTS Operator of Ukraine (OGTSU), during the annual DiXi Group Ukrainian Energy Security Dialogue 2024 conference, NV Business reports.

"The risks of attacks on our facilities are increasing significantly. We are taking all measures to ensure security," he said.

According to Dmytro Lippa, the company conducted a series of stress tests that demonstrated the system's resilience to external factors. He noted that the shutdown of the GTS is "a pretty apocalyptic scenario" and its probability is "quite low."

The Ukrainian Gas Transmission System has over 500 compressor units on its balance sheet, of which only 10 are involved in gas pumping. In total, the Ukrainian Gas Transmission System is expected to handle over 150 billion cubic meters of gas, the head of the Ukrainian Gas Transmission System reported.

He also commented on the completion of the agreement with PJSC Gazprom.

"Our baseline scenario is to stop the flow of Russian gas through the Ukrainian gas transportation system," said Dmytro Lippa.

He added that the termination of the contract with Gazprom is included in the planning of the financial indicators of the Ukrainian Gas Transport System for the next year. The same was done in the Russian company.

Recall that at the end of 2019, Ukraine and Russia signed an agreement on the transit of Russian gas to Europe for a period of 5 years. Under its terms, Gazprom undertook to pay for the transit of 65 billion cubic meters of gas in 2020 and 40 billion cubic meters in subsequent years. After the start of the full-scale war, gas pumping decreased by half. NJSC Naftogaz of Ukraine filed a corresponding lawsuit with the Stockholm Arbitration Court to recover about $700 million from Gazprom for violating the terms of the contract.

As reported by "Ukrainian Energy", on November 28, during the 11th massive attack on Ukrainian energy infrastructure facilities this year, the Russian army shelled Naftogaz facilities.
