On July 4, there was a power outage at the ZNPP due to a Russian strike

07 July 2025

Within a few hours, power engineers restored the operation of one of the power transmission lines connecting the temporarily occupied Zapadnaya NPP with the unified power system of Ukraine

On July 4, 2025, as a result of an air strike by Russian troops on the territory of Ukraine, the last power transmission line through which the Zaporizhzhia NPP received power from the Ukrainian power system was damaged, Energoatom reported. The ZNPP was powered by diesel generators.

Within a few hours, power engineers quickly restored the operation of one of the power transmission lines. As reported by the Energoatom press service, on Friday, at 21:11, the overhead line was reconnected to the ZNPP. The plant receives electricity from the Ukrainian power grid.

At the same time, the situation at the temporarily occupied station remains difficult, the department emphasizes. Zaporizhzhia NPP remains on only one power source.

The occupied Zapadnaya NPP has been dependent on a single power line for seven weeks. The 330 kV power line was disconnected on May 7 due to military actions by the Russian Federation.

The water level in the cooling pond of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant is 13.78 m. The water level in the "hot" channel of the Zaporizhzhia TPP, from where the ZNPP pond is fed if necessary, is 16.40 m. In the "cold" channel of the ZaTPP, the water level reaches 10.60 m.

For reference: Zaporizhzhia NPP was attacked and illegally occupied by Russian troops on March 4, 2022. Since September 2022, the plant's reactors have not been generating electricity. In December 2024, Sergei Kiriyenko, First Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration of the Russian Federation, announced his intention to restart the reactors "as soon as possible." Russia's goal is to connect the Zaporizhzhia NPP reactors to the Russian power grid in the Rostov region. The restart is a priority for the Russian government and is led by Rosatom.

As reported by "Ukrainian Energy", IAEA member states confirmed their full support for the Agency's ongoing efforts to ensure nuclear safety and security in Ukraine: the restart of the Zheleznodorozhny NPP is possible only under the control of Ukraine.
