Coal reserves in Ukraine reach about 3 million tons - Prime Minister

10 January 2025

This very high figure is due to the destruction of a significant amount of coal-fired electricity generation due to Russian attacks

Coal reserves in Ukraine have reached a historic high of approximately 3 million tons. Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal announced this on Friday, January 10, during the "government question hour" in the Verkhovna Rada, Interfax Ukraine reports.

"We have approximately 3 million tons of coal in our warehouses. This is a historical figure, if not for all of history, then for the last 20 years for sure," said Denys Shmyhal.

According to the Prime Minister, such significant reserves are explained by the fact that the Russians destroyed a significant amount of coal-fired electricity generation (thermal power plants) in Ukraine.

As "Ukrainian Energy" reported, in October last year, the Ministry of Energy assured that Ukraine's reserves of fuel and lubricants for the winter were sufficient.
