The program covers activities in 38 communities related to coal mining and thermal generation
The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the State Target Program for the Fair Transformation of Ukraine's Coal Regions by 2030, according to a statement by Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal.
"This is the first strategic document at the national level, which will become a roadmap for both authorities and international partners," the head of the Cabinet of Ministers noted.
As Denys Shmyhal explained, Ukraine, with the support of the German government, the European Commission, and the World Bank, is carrying out a fair transformation of coal regions as part of the implementation of necessary reforms in all areas on the path to EU membership.
According to him, the targeted state program covers activities in 38 communities related to coal mining and thermal generation.
Its implementation will be carried out in four key areas:
● support for the local economy;
● development of decentralized and diversified energy;
● human capital;
● environmental sustainability.
We would like to remind you that the German Society for International Cooperation (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit, GIZ) is ready to assist in bringing Ukrainian legislation on the transformation of coal regions, in particular the closure of mines, into line with EU standards.
As Ukrainian Energy reported, the moratorium on bankruptcy of state-owned coal mines has been extended for another year - until January 1, 2026.
