The occupation of Pokrovsk: what will it mean for metallurgists

26 September 2024

Steel production may drop by half

If Pokrovsk is lost, Ukraine may halve steel production due to coal shortages.

Oleksandr Kalenkov, president of Ukrmetalurgprom, reported this.

During the two years of the full-scale invasion, the volume of steel production in Ukraine amounted to 6 - 6.5 million tons per year.

On the territory controlled by Ukraine, there are still resources to reach the level of steel production of 12 million tons per year, but in the case of the loss of Pokrovsk, these indicators may decrease to 2-3 million tons per year.

Pokrovsk has the only mine controlled by Ukraine. It produces coking coal.

As reported by "Ukrainian Energy", there are 3 million tons of coal in Ukraine's warehouses: will we have enou.
