Ukraine began exporting electricity to Moldova on the night of January 2

Energoatom sells electricity at night, when it has a surplus

Moldova's state-owned energy company Energocom has purchased the electricity needed to cover the deficit on January 2. In particular, the electricity will be imported from Ukraine.

This is reported by Suspilne with reference to NewsMaker.

Energocom assures that they have reserved the necessary capacity for today. Since the electricity supply on the Moldovan-Romanian border is limited to 315 MW out of the required 650-800 MW, part of the electricity is reserved at daily auctions from capacities that are not used on other borders of Romania with neighboring countries.

"Thus, we managed to reserve the necessary capacity for January 2. We will additionally purchase electricity from the Ukrainian Energoatom at night, when they have a surplus of energy and can export it," Energocom said.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that since the transportation of Russian gas through Ukraine ceased on the morning of January 1, the absolute majority of European countries have "successfully adapted" to such changes.

"Today, our common task is to support Moldova during the period of energy transformation. We also have to withstand the hysteria of some European politicians who prefer mafia schemes with Moscow instead of transparent energy policy," the Head of State said.

He added that the annual transit of Russian blue fuel through Ukrainian territory to Europe amounted to over 130 billion cubic meters and emphasized that its termination is one of Moscow's biggest defeats.

In January 2025, Moldova intends to purchase most of its gas from Romania. 62% of the needs will be covered by imports from Romania. Another 30% will be provided by CHP plants and local renewable energy producers.

As reported by "Ukrainian Energy", on December 6, 2024, Moldova was on the verge of declaring a state of emergency in the energy sector. The Minister of Energy was dismissed from his post due to managerial errors that led to a critical situation.

On January 1, 2025, in the interests of national security, the transportation of Russian natural gas through the territory of Ukraine was stopped, the Ministry of Energy reported. Ukraine informed its international partners about this in accordance with the established procedure.
