Banks provided UAH 362 million in loans for energy projects in May

09 June 2025

In May 2025, businesses received UAH 252 million in loans for energy infrastructure restoration projects, and the population was provided with UAH 110 million in loans for energy needs

According to a survey of 20 banks conducted by the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU), during May 2025, financial institutions provided 86 loans for business projects to restore energy infrastructure, totaling UAH 252 million, the NBU press service said.

This is more than 5 times less than in April this year, when businesses received UAH 1.3 billion (79 loans). At the same time, in May, banks approved 98 business applications for UAH 2.6 billion, which is more than 13 times more than in April (UAH 192 million, 67 applications). Also in May, financial institutions received 231 applications from businesses for energy loans for UAH 1.4 billion.

In total, for the period from June 1, 2024 to May 25, 2025, banks received 4,500 applications from businesses for lending to energy infrastructure restoration projects for a total amount of UAH 86.4 billion. During this period, financial institutions provided loans and opened limits for the amount of UAH 18.2 billion. The volume of the gross portfolio of loans for energy needs of legal entities, taking into account repayments as of the end of May, is UAH 11.8 billion.

Banks also lend to the population. Thus, during May 2025, citizens were granted 616 loans for energy needs in the amount of UAH 110 million, and in total since June 2024 - 7,980 loans for UAH 1.2 billion. The volume of the gross portfolio of loans to individuals for the above purposes, taking into account repayment, is UAH 962 million.

In total, since June 2024, the financed generation capacity under loans provided to businesses has exceeded 705 MW. The largest amounts of funds have been allocated for the purchase and installation of gas-fired cogeneration plants (262 MW), the construction of solar power plants (SPPs) (249 MW), and the purchase of diesel and gasoline generators (130 MW). Projects are financed in 21 regions of the country.

The NBU reminds that most energy loans require appropriate design, equipment procurement, and provide for phased financing, so the actual amounts of loans provided are less than the amounts of applications received by banks. At the same time, the amount of applications received is overestimated due to their submission to several banks at the same time and the subsequent choice of one of them or even refusal of the loan in favor of alternative sources of financing.

For reference. With the assistance of the NBU, 20 banks with a share of over 85% of the sector's net assets signed a memorandum of readiness to finance the restoration of the energy sector in June 2024. The banks' proposals take into account the needs of various categories of small, medium and large businesses and households. In particular, entrepreneurs can attract financing for projects to build solar, wind or biogas plants, build gas turbine and gas piston power plants, purchase industrial batteries, storage devices, etc.

The base lending rate in accordance with the aforementioned memorandum is from 13.5% per annum (or UIRD3M + 0.5% for the first year of financing, and then no more than UIRD12M + 3%).

As reported by "Ukrainian Energy", solar panels worth 2 million euros to be installed in Globyne. This is the first pilot project of twin cities aimed at supporting the energy sustainability of communities.
